How can I add a USB external hard drive to my dell?

My older computer stopped working. I took the hard drive out and put it in a external case with a USB. I changed the drive to a slave. I am hooking up to a dell running Vista. It can not find a device driver. Can i make this work?
help me please

Change the drive to master, then plug it in.
