Join me as I journey into unknown realms in my quest to tighten up my Mac back up regime! I thought my 1TB FireWire HD had packed in. Murphy’s Law being what it is, this contained the only copies of my iTunes and iPhoto libraries.

Murphy, being the toad that he is, also decreed that after I had bought a replacement (USB 2.0 only) drive, the said “defunct” FireWire drive started working again. I prefer FireWire for the speed, but I was alarmed at how close I came to losing everything. So here, I investigate the use of Personal Back Up X5 software, so that the FireWire HD can be backed up onto the new HD.

Not being familiar with the internal workings of Disk Utility, I do refer to the new HD manual in order to reformat the new drive to work with Mac OS X, but the process took under 10 mins. The 2 edits erase bits where my browser decided to pop up and interfere, and the process of entering the password to P B X5, as personal info was on show. So it really took about 8mins to perform the process up to starting the back up. Not a long time, but worthwhile when protecting valuable data.
