How do I format my seagate external hard drive to work with my imac?

I had the drive hooked up to my PC first.

If you want to use HFS+, you can go to Macintosh HD->Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility and format it.

Just note that you cannot read HFS+ on Windows without a special driver.

I just plugged in my HP external hard drive and my iMac just accepted it.

You might not need to format it, plug it into the monitor or keyboard and tell me what it says.

Mine just displays my HP as an icon on the right side of the monitor.
