When editing footage on Final Cut Pro can I work with footage I’ve transferred to an external HD?

To clarify: My mac only has around 10 GB of space left and I need to edit a 35 minute video. I would like to transfer the video my external HD and work from there without importing the footage to my computer including rendering the video? Is that possible, any other solution? Thanks. And the footage will be AVCHD.

It is possible, just plug in the external and keep it plugged int the whole time you’re editing. The render time will be significantly slower, and you may experience lag while editing. But it should still work.
