How do I install Age of Empires Expansion to an external HD?
I am trying to install Age of Empires 2 The Conquerors expansion to my external HD. I installed the Age of Empires 2 first so the expansion should install but when the auto run comes up and I click install, it simply tells me that Age of Empires 2 isn’t installed and I need to install it first. Is there no way to have it find the game on the external HD? I am trying to put it on the external so I can take it to school to play because I have a 6 hour gap between classes.
You need to perform a CUSTOM install.
This will allow you to assign the game to the HDD of your choice.
The Install defaults for ANY game/program is for the C: drive.
That being said, there is a VERY significant problem with your plan… Unless you are planning to install the game on your school’s network (I wouldn’t recommend it), installing the game on a HDD and then plugging the HDD into a computer *at* school won’t work. Regardless of what HDD you install the game on, there are a certain number of files that are installed on your C: drive that the computer needs to run the programs. This means that you *still* won’t be able to do it.
There *is* a way around it, but that means you’re learning hacker’s secrets, and most schools don’t like hackers operating on their networks – unless they are employed by the School…
If you have a laptop with sufficient memory and graphics capability (my laptop bought in 2002 can run AoE2 and all of it’s expansions), you can install on *that* and use *it* to play the game.
Good Luck!

Experience – had same games installed on both a laptop and a desktop sharing the same external HDD…had to install it on BOTH machines just for the C: drive files.
