Do external hard drives expand storage on your computer or just for back up?
Do external hard drives expand storage on your computer or just for back up? I need a little more storage for my computer for programs. will an external hard drive add more storage on my computer? i was looking at Toshiba 250GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive and Western Digital 250GB My Passport Essential Hard Drive, will any of these help me out?
It does just what the name says… it’s an external hard drive. It’s a separate piece of hardware from your main hard drive and therefore it will not combine space. You can run games and programs off of it, but it will just provide extra side storage. Think of it like a new, separate hard drive.
as long as you keep it plugged in to your comp all the time you can use it as extra storage.
i have a seperate external drive just for music and it stays plugged in always

External hard drives can do both. Chances are, your hard drive comes with software that backs up your computer, but whether or not you use it is your choice. I personally keep multiple programs on my hard drive that I can take with me to eCafes, or are too big for my laptop. However, I also use it to keep backups of important things.
Pro-tip: If something is important, have at least three copies in three different forms. (flash drive, online, disk, floppy, hard drive, ect.)

it works as external data storage but it bit slower than internal HD. Western Digital is better.
