turn external on, plug in the usb drive. restart computer.

    sometimes externals are not hot-swappable.

You can’t access it from the Start > Computer area? There shouldn’t be any files to install if that’s what you’re looking for. You may want to check that the correct plug is plugged into the hard drive (some come with data and data & power cords). You might also want to check that the device is turned on.

Open My Computer and from the Tools menu choose Map Network Drives. The usb device should show up then click down the file tree to see what on the drive.
