Can I use external hard disk in a P4 system instead of internal IDE disk?

It seems my system has obsolete however I would like to keep it as a stand by. While all other components are intact and working in a perfect manner. Hard disk has become unusable. IDE seems to be out of production and Can I use my Cpu with external hard disk alone? Is it possible? Will there be any problems?

of-course, Here you have 2 options

option 1
======

directly connect your external hard disk to usb drive and boot from there

how to install full windows xp in an external usb drive ?
