Can I use an external hard drive without a functioning "internal" hard drive?

in cheap external hard drives | Comments (6)

Bottom line: Laptop hard drive is dying, got the Click of Death and will not be around much longer. 2.5" SATA drives can be costly so I do not want to replace it, instead I want to buy a cheaper external hard drive, install Windows 7 back onto it and run my laptop using the external. Will this suffice?

No. Windows (being the crippled OS that it is) requires that the OS be installed locally. Although it can be configured to run, it will be slow and most likely will crash often. Programmatically, anything is possible. Just a bad idea though.

You could get a small external hard disk drive (one of the little ones) as they have a Laptop HDD inside. This makes a Cheap Replacement. Just need to ensure the "connectivity" of the data/power adapters match. I have performed this only 11 or so times with 100% success.

If you could go without Windows 7 for a while, get a free copy of a Linux LIVE CD or LIVE DVD. The entire OS would run from CD/DVD without any thought to your HDD. The external drive would be your filing cabinet if you wish to save anything.

Although a LIVE OS is slow (cd drives are slow) it would run fast after each app loads. Web surfing from Linux LIVE CD using Firefox is just stupid FAST! Will blow your mind how fast pages load. Will upset you when you go back to Windows (if you tried it, that is).
