Can defragmenting a 1 tb external hard drive take a week?

in 1 tb external hard drive | Comments (8)

I have a 1 tb external hard drive that I have been using for all my downloads (movies and music, lots of them) as well as for my photographs. I keep all the music, but the movies usually get deleted after I burn them. I just cleaned out my photos and burned about 7 dvd’s worth and deleted them. After cleaning out everything except the music and a couple movies, there’s about 650 to 700 gb free right now.

I started running defrag at about this time yesterday (the thing has gotten REALLY slow) and about 24 hours later it’s reporting that it is 21% condensed on the 1st pass. Can it really take that long? I know I’ve neglected this drive so far, but that seems excessive.

Yes it can take a long time, especially if you use the built-in defragmenter — it just was not meant for such heavy-duty use.

You should get a good commercial defragmenter that can handle large drives efficiently.

If using the built-in utility, defrag can take a very long time (and you can’t use the PC while it’s defragmenting).

I recently saw a post by a guy who reported his 350 GB drive took 104 HOURS to defrag with the built-in (see:

http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?s=8d9413354d8c6b5de4f4c7a9ec4d2ade&t=73369&page=2).

Disks become fragmented with use. There’s a lot of really good info on defragmentation at:
the site referenced below.

I recommend using a good automatic third party program that can defrag transparently while using the PC so you don’t have wait for ever for it to defrag.

Below is a Top 10 Reviews side-by-side comparison of the best defrag programs available.

The top placers are automatic and they all offer a free trial.

The gold medalist prevents fragmentation.

Good luck!

Seagate external hard drive locked files error?

in seagate external hard drive | Comments (2)

Hello there, I just got an upgrade to my computer, and as a consequence it deleted all my data. Naturally I backed up my files to a seagate external hard drive, the 250 GB one. When i tried to recover my data, some of my files had little red circles in the corners, and when i tried to open them it says "the folder cannot be opened because you dont have permission to see its contents. Please any help would be appreciated, I have no idea what to do and I need those files

Yes, you can. firstly, do not write any new data to the hard drive in case the existed data were overwritten. then a data recovery program is needed. I recommend you use 001 File Recovery,
easy to use with omnipotent function. Once the hard drive was detected by PC, Use 001 File Recovery to scan it. and then you can see lost data appeared in the task list. click "recovery" to recover lost data.
You can get the program from here:

Need some instructions on how to set up an external HD for use with my PS3?

in external hd | Comments (1)

Just ebay’d a Toshiba 400gb external HD and need to know how to format it to be recognized by the PS3.
Also,I noticed that the PS3 will allow you to copy/paste game save files into a storage device but will it allow new game utility files to be written into the storage device? The internal HD is about full so I just want to make sure that Ill be able to redirect all new game information into the external.
Thanks to all who respond.

You will need to download an application called SwissKnife to format your Harddrive to Fat32. You can copy anything onto the Harddrive. I don’t think there is a way for you to make it so the files will go directly to the external harddrive, you will have to occasionally copy the files over.

Can you just connect an external HDD to your 360?

in external hdd | Comments (1)

And be able to watch movies, picutures, or listen to music through either the Video Library, Music, or Picture library? Or is there something that you need to do in order for the 360 to recognize the external HDD?

I’ve plugged in my external HDD and it doesn’t appear in the list. I know I am missing something here.

Make sure it’s FAT32.
to check plug it in a PC and right click for Properties, and check its File System. majority of external HDD’s come as Fat 32, though some are NTFS.
Basically Fat32 is kind of old, so it’s pretty universal and will work with anything. NTFS is Window’s only.
To make it Fat32 you’ll need to reformat it, Windows can only do drives upto 32GB’s. so i use CompuApp’s Swissknife.
Due to Fat32 being old it has a limit in that individual files cannot be bigger than 4GB, so some HD movies won’t fit, but they seem to have issues playing on 360 in any case.

Some basic questions about external hard drives?

in external hard drives | Comments (2)

Hi I have some basic questions about external hard drives:
- Can a desktop external drive be connected to a Windows 7 laptop?
- Can a firewire external drive be connected to the eSATA or expresscard port on my laptop?
- Can a USB 3 external drive be connected to the USB 2 ports on my laptop?
- Can an external drive have multiple connection types? For example, having firewire, eSATA, and USB 2
- Does having its own power supply increase its transfer speed?
Thank you.

1. Yes, external drives are compatible with both desktps and laptops.

You can convert internal desktop drives with a USB enclosure. For example, this one works for both SATA and older IDE/PATA drives.

2. Yes, but only if you buy an adapter (for example, Expresscard to Firewire)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839328038

3. Yes, it will only operate at USB 2.0 speed.

4. Yes, external drives often have multiple connection types.

5. It generally doesn’t affect transfer speed. However, your system bus can only safely provide a limited amount of power to USB devices. So devices with their own power supplies eliminate that load, avoiding freezes/lockups which can occur if USB devices are drawing too much power.
