Since formatting my laptop,I appear to have lost the drivers for my Seagate external hard disc drive?

January 29, 2011 in seagate external hard disk | Comments (4)

I have entered the serial number of the drive into Seagate website but am still no nearer in understanding what I need to do. it did suggest that I return it to them, but as I live in Vietnam, this is not an option with the postal system here. I have lost too much mail to risk losing that.
I think I need a driver but do not know how or where to get it. PC shops here are NO help as they do not understand technical English.
It plugs into 2 USB ports, one for power and one for data. Not sure of the number. It is a 160 gig Freeagent Go
It now tells me that the drive has an I/O error…………….

I have read your initial and additional (2) updates.
You are sure you are connecting both USB sockets to the PC and the single one to the drive unit? If you don’t then there is insufficient power to run the drive and this will give you the I/O errors.
It is also possible the drive unit itself is having issues and is failing.
Check that the USB connector that fits into the case is still in shape, sometimes they get slightly squashed and you get a bad connection, you can carefully bend it back into shape but only if it is not flat sided like it should be.
I would suggest you dismantle the drive unit and check the power and data cables at the drive end are connected, they do sometimes come loose.
You can try and run the drive outside of the casing (put it away from any chance of contact anything metal) just to be sure it is not pulling the cables loose when you slide the drive back into the casing.
As a last resort see if you can connect the drive to a PC (not using the external case) and check it is not the drive itself, but I suspect it is the case connections.

1 TB Element External Hard Drive. Formatted to exFat, and then to FAT32 for PS3. Works, but now well.?

in 1 tb external hard drive | Comments (1)

I have an external 1 TB hard drive. It is the Element WD drive, with external power source. I bought this to use with my PS3. I use a windows computer, so I tried formatting it using the regular windows software, but it would only format to NTSC or exFat…so I tried exFat. Didn’t work. Realized I had to do FAT32. I found a program that could format it to FAT32, but now the drive barely works. I did get it to play a show on the PS3, but only once and when I try to put files on it It takes way too long, and then there is an error. Any help on how to fix this and use the HD on my PS3 would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Biran
The drive is now in FAT32, but I really can’t copy more than one file at a time. One file will go fine. If I copy more than one at a time from my PC, it says it will take a really long time and then eventually freeze up. Can I just reformat it again. If so..are there any programs you suggest? Or is the drive dead and should I try to return it because it is new. But the error isn’t on the PS3 end. The error is with the drive an how it is formatted I think. I also have another WD Passport drive that is 300GB that works perfectly with my PC so it is specific to this drive.

it might be the read / write speed of the drive since a ps3 is only designed to work with a maximum 500 gigabyte hdd ?
or it’s the way your files and folders are setup or their formats aren’t ps3 friendly ?

I think it’s more likely the first , the files are not being read at a good speed compatible with the ps3 .
look into creating a partition in fat32 that’s 500 gigabytes or less and check your videos are in a ps3 compatible format .
it would help to know the error code you are getting . try googling it and see what it means .

Reviews on Seagate external hard drive?

in seagate external hard drive | Comments (3)

I’m thinking of purchasing an external hard drive to keep all my music on. I was looking online to get an Idea of price when I discovered a Seagate FreeAgent Go Portable Hard Drive (black, 500GB) at Wal-mart listed online for $67.82 which is a price I’d let myself spend right now, however being that cheap I’m questioning the quality. So I’m wondering if anyone has purchased one of these and what your review is of the product?

I have five(5) "Seagate" external HD’s. One is a "GO". It does NOT have a wall-adapter power supply. It gets it’s power through the USB connector. Sometimes it is a little "picky", as to which USB port I use. It likes the rear connectors best. BUT, it’s really GREAT !!!

Cheap external hard drive?

in cheap external hard drives | Comments (1)

Were can I buy really really cheap external hard drives from?
Don’t have to be big could be about 120gb but as cheap as possible

Try looking at Office Max. They usually have some of the smaller ones around at a decent price.
You could also check online at TigerDirect.com and Newegg.com for some good deals.
