three months ago I bought a 320gb external hard drive from Seagate. Just recently it has stopped working. When I plug it in the lights flash on and off. My computer recognizes it but it will not open it up. It says that it needs to download the drivers software. But I have already done that a while ago. So does anyone know how to fix this problem? I really need to use the hard drive again.
If this is not a mains powered unit are you sure you are connecting both USB sockets to the PC and the single one to the drive unit? If you don’t then there is insufficient power to run the drive and this will give you errors.
It is also possible the drive unit itself is having issues and is failing.
Uninstall the drivers anyway, reboot and reload just in case it is a simple driver failure.
Check that the USB connector that fits into the case is still in shape, sometimes they get slightly squashed and you get a bad connection, you can carefully bend it back into shape but only if it is not flat sided like it should be.
I would suggest you dismantle the drive unit and check the power and data cables at the drive end are connected, they do sometimes come loose.
You can try and run the drive outside of the casing (put it away from any chance of contact anything metal) just to be sure it is not pulling the cables loose when you slide the drive back into the casing.
As a last resort see if you can connect the drive to the PC (not using the external case) and check it is not the drive itself, but I suspect it is the case connections.

Thanks for watching, The drive works really well, although bulky compared to other portable drives of it’s size, the seagate is a nice storage device to back up files. Comes with a 2 year warranty. The drive runs quietly and efficiently.
