i have seagate external HD i.e free agent desk with 1tb space…i want to know that can i connect this to players with usb port…like DVD players with usb port and car mp3 players with usb port?
Won’t work. Those devices don’t have the underlying operating system to be able to read an external hard disk. Their embedded firmware is capable of reading things like thumbdrives, but doesn’t have the driver firmware or the other software necessary to read an external disk.

I would like to get one that is at least 500 GB up to 1 TB. Please factor in price, reliability and compatibility.
I want to add it to a Dell Latitude D600. Yeah, yeah, I know my LT is kinda old -n- crusty now.
Thanks.
500 GB

I have to different External Hard Drives Seagate and the ISO files are 4 gigs in size DVD . What is the problem and what can be done to get the file as a ISO image to the drive?
No I am trying to copy the ISO Image file from my Laptop c hard drive to an external hard drive. USB.
And I have two different Seagate external hard drives that I am trying. Both will not let me do so!
The drive is external and does not have a cd-rom. It is a SEAGATE. It will not let me transfer ISO files that are not corrupted in any way. The files are 4.7 gigs and are from the c drive to the external, in a ISO DVD ready to burn file. Just trying to back it up. I can’t.
Two things:
First, if your drives’ File Allocation format are different, you may have trouble copying from one drive to the other. (NTFS vs FAT32 vs FAT). You will be able to see the file allocation type by right clicking on the drive and viewing their properties (look for File System:)
What I suggest is you try to burn the ISO image unto a DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW then go and transfer it to the other drive – such discs are cheap anyway.
Second, the ISO file may be corrupted. As some are, they wont let you modify or the very least move them. If you got it from somewhere, try obtaining it again.
Hope it helps, if you could add updates on this please do so.

I was just wondering if its possible to download the WoW files for mac from a PC onto an external HD? I was just wondering because at our school we are allowed to play games as long as they’re off an HD or flash drive of some sort.
Files???? How many files? What kind, what format / file name / extension are these files? EXE files will only play in Windows. Mac application files will only play in OS X. If you want to play Mac files on a PC, you are out of luck. If you want to play Windows applications on a Mac, use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition on your Mac and install Windows.

Are laptops good with external hard drives?
If I get a external HDD, it would be disconnected frequently since I move around a lot.
Should I get get a External Hard Drive for my laptop?
Yes, external hard drives are compatible and useful for laptops. Both my sister and I use external drives with our laptops for work and travel – even switching between external hard drives for different purposes. They’re a great way to keep large sized programs and files off of your laptop so that it can run as efficiently as possible and they are, of course, incredibly portable.

Lately, whenever I try to eject my external hard drive from my computer (it connects via USB), it says something about how the device is in use and it cannot be stopped and it won’t give me that message that it is safe to unplug the device. It does this even though all applications and folders are closed, and nothing appears to be running on the computer. Is it safe to just unplug it? Why does it say it cannot be stopped when I am not using it? Can this be fixed?
Right click in task tray and end all or any programs running in back ground and see if this helps. If you have an icon in task tray for external hard drive right click on and choose exit and remove. It should show an icon for any devise connected by USN, you might try reinstall the external hard drive soft ware this might correct problem.

I want to buy a 500 GB or 1 TB External Hard Disk. What is the difference between the 2.5" External Hard Disk and 3.5" External Hard Disk ? 2.5" External Hard Disk is costlier than 3.5" External Hard Disk? Which company offers chep and best prices for External Hard Disk ?
There’s no difference between the 2.5" and the 3.5" externals, just the physical size of the HD inside and that of course dictates the size of the external HD unit itself.
As for the best company, after using many different brands the top 2 are Seagate and Western Digital (WD). I’ve encountered far fewer technical issues and defects while using Seagate drives, both in the work field and in my personal home uses and travels.

At my work place I care a 250GB external hard drive with me, that has all the data that I and my co-worker use on it. This data is literly millons of files, it slows FAT32 down big time. But we use the two main OS’s (LINUX and Windows). so what is the best file system for this dirve? I was thinking reisfersFS, JFS, XFS. but I don’t know. all help will be wounderful.
how do you think ext2/3/4 would do for this?
If you use two different OSs like window sand linux to access the external hard drive, FAT or FAT32 is the best option. NTFS is only for windows and you can’t access it by linux.
Try doing a defrag on the external hard drive. Also depends on what kind of connection the external drive uses. Scsi or firewire may be fast.
