Should I buy this 1 TB External Hard Drive?

April 29, 2010 in 1 tb external hard drive | Comments (4)

Off of newegg.ca http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136321

I’ve never bought computer parts off of the internet but at stores in Montreal where I live like Microbytes the prices of things are like double.

This purchase seems so cheap and HUGE!

What do you think?

Newegg is a reputable company, easy to deal with.

The reviews are 89% very positive.

The price is phenomenal, but it comes with some minor inconveniences. The drive is formatted FAT32, so you’re going to need to reformat it to get the read/write speed you want from it. That’s going to take some time to do.

Other than that, it looks like a pretty decent storage solution for a little money.

Whats the difference between 2 Seagate external hard drive model numbers?

in seagate external hard drive | Comments (2)

I’ve decided on a 1TB, 7200rpm, 32mb cache external hard drive and want to get the most up to date model. What is the difference between these two models ST310005EXA101-RK and ST310005EXD101-RK? (Other than one has an A and one has a D lol!)

The D is the newer firmware version drive. Seagate had problems with firmware issues. I almost bought that drive but I chose the WD 1TB black cavier drive instead because of the firmware problems and I am a fan of Seagate.

Can I use an external HDD to free up some space?

in external hdd | Comments (2)

I’m down to 4~ GBs of space on my internal HDD, and I need more space. Can I just hook up an external HDD to my computer and use it as a normal HDD, or will I have to treat it differently? I’ve heard of them being commonly used for back-up files, but I want to be able to access and use the files on the HDD like normal. Will this work?

Yes this will work,

how ever installing some programs to it might not work!

i would recommend using that Hard drive for storing, music / videos / pictures and documents.

then install all your programs u use on your main drive

Where can I find a really cheap external hard drive?

in cheap external hard drives | Comments (5)

It doesn’t need to be that much space, I just need it for pictures so my computer doesn’t become slow
I am a photographer aspiring to be a professional, and I already have like 20 gb of pictures on a 100 gb internal hard drive and I would like to move them all to an external.

You won’t notice a difference in speed if all you’re gonna do is move pictures. To see a noticable difference in speed, try getting rid of programs you dont use. Also hardware upgrades will increase performance as well.

What are the differences bt External Hard Drives and External hard drive enclosures?

in external hard drives | Comments (2)

My computers memory is not that big and i would like to expand the memory and I want a external hard drive but while i was browsing websites for external hard drives i saw a external hard drive enclosure. Now what is the difference between then and why is one so much cheaper than the other? And what are their functions? Like what does it do.

Let’s say you have and older, broken computer. You could pull the internal hard drive out, and put it inside an enclosure. Now you have an external drive, and you’re recycling your old drive, which is obviously more cost effective. The "enclosure" does NOT include an actual drive. It’s just a box to put a hard drive in, and make it USB.

Can Adobe Photoshop that was installed in an external hard disk be run from any other computer?

in external hard disk | Comments (3)

For example, i install adobe Photoshop into my external hard disk instead of my internal hard disk. Reason being, i would like it portable and be able to run Photoshop at my client’s laptop/computer instead of investing on a brand new laptop/Macbook. Anyone ever try this before?

Not likely under Windows. The installation of Adobe Photoshop would have stored critical run data in the machine’s Registry, which is on the C: drive, not the external. That data will not go along with the external drive to another machine.

Sorry.

What is the best external hard drive for a Macbook Pro?

in best external hard drives | Comments (1)

A friend of mine wants to buy a external hard drive for her macbook pro and I’m out of the loop with whats out there. I know there are ones that are both pc/mac compitable as well as ones specifically compatible for mac.

My question is there an advantage of going for a specific mac compatible drive? Any issues with external drives? Anything I should look for spec wise? Any recommendations? Thx

The Western Digital Studio edition (Quad interface ESATA USB 2.0 Firewire 400/800 different capacities ranging up to 2TB) external drives are very good with mac they come mac formatted out the box but can be used with a PC as well easy too hook up and reliable

External Hard Disk Drive Format and Power Supply?

in external hard disk drives | Comments (1)

Hello,

I just purchased a Lacie 500 GB External Drive. I have 2 questions.

1) Do I need to connect the power supply all the time when using the disk? I know some drives does not require a power supply. Can this disk work while only connected to a USB port?

2) My hard disk came in FAT32 format. Is it better to format it to NTSF? What are the advantages? How do I do that.

Thanks…

1) Yes, the hard drive should come with an AC adepter. It needs more power than it can draw from a USB port (or USB2). All desktop hard drives (3.5") need AC power. All laptop hard drives (2.5") or smaller can run only using USB port.

2) It depends on what you need to do with your drive. For pure storage, keep FAT32 because it gives you more space.
NTFS supports more secured setting but it also needs extra space to store the security data.

Hope it helps.
